The front page of The Iffy, Issue No. 1, July 2021: a shirtless man crouched in front of an open refrigerator, eating fruit and holding a bunch of bananas, under a salmon pink masthead. Joel Wood is the first byline on the cover.

My part. Wrote it. Page two of the first issue, edited by Brennan Vickery.

The Iffy was a New York newsprint paper. Brennan Vickery edited it, and I met him in person on a trip to the city after this came out. Issue No. 1 ran my piece on the California recall on page two, a few pages ahead of Sam Kriss on the end of genre.

The top of page two of The Iffy: the headline Total Recall, the subhead Cali steadies itself for emancipation from Daddy Newsom, and the byline Joel Wood, with the next page's headline showing through the newsprint in reverse.
Page two. The newsprint is thin enough to read the next page backwards.

The thesis, in one line: "the figurative father of the Golden State is essentially facing a custody hearing for the nation state's 40 million acrimonious suntanned children."

That's the polite part. The rest is political, crass, and I hope a little funny, so it stays off the portfolio. Ask me for a copy.
